The loudest show ever.
While working in the newspaper business I was frustrated by not being able to do more creative things. I would watch the photographers get into great shows free and come back with amazing images. So I figured I would buy a camera and do the same thing.
The very first concert I was fortunate to shoot was My Bloody Valentine. When valentine did a comeback tour, I asked the music editor if I could go to Chicago and shoot. The funny thing about the event, I had zero experience, and no portfolio and valentine sent me a press pass. People were so surprised I obtained the pass as if it was a rarity.
Needless to say, I was beyond ecstatic. I would go home and practice shooting at night, to mimic a concert environment. I wasn’t ready. The day of the show, I was ushered into the pit area. The holding block for photographers by the front stage right before the band comes out. I had examined hundreds of hours of valentine stage set up and figured all the photographers would run towards Kevin Shields. So I ran far left, where Bilinda Butcher would stand.
As the lights dimmed the roar of the crowd thundered, valentine emerges and behold, Bilinda Butcher is right in front of me. She looked at me and smiled as I was raising my camera, and fogged up the lens from excitement. With a joker like smile on my face.
I basically came out of the show with one good decent, non-blurry, fogged up, shaky shot. I was in such a panic mode while in front I shook constantly and would fog up the camera as soon as I looked through the viewfinder. A fun memory and an amazing band which I have never heard a band as loud as My Bloody Valentine before or since.
